The Puma Future Z 1.3 advertises to have a “sock-like” sensation on feet. Compared to other brands in this category, the Future Z 1.3 has one of the best knitted uppers I’ve seen in a football boot. It does truly feel like you’re wearing socks when you put them on for the first time.

The upper is both pliable and soft, needing no break in time whatsoever. The sensation on feet is similar to a slightly padded sock around both the mid-foot and the toe-box. The padding is minimal throughout the boot, allowing you to get a very close sensation on the ball. However, the upper does provide slightly more protection than the razor thin Puma Ultra 1.4.

Fusion Fit Plus Band

Puma has maintained the Fusion Fit band that’s been used on previous models. This compressive band provides lockdown and stability throughout the mid-foot. The elasticity of the band also helps the boot fit comfortably regardless of your foot type.

Fits Like a Glove

The knitted upper on the Future Z 1.3 wraps and conforms to the shape of your foot. The boot provides a tight feel through the mid-foot while still allowing some room in the toe-box. This means that the boot should work well for players who have slightly wider feet. An internal lining also gives the boot a smooth and uniform feel on feet.

I find that Puma boots tend to run on the smaller side. For that reason I order a half size up to get the best fit. I also have wide feet, so I prefer having slightly more room in the front of the boot.

Grip Control Texture

Puma has added what they call “Advanced Creator Zones” on the Future Z 1.3. These zones appear as textured areas on the sides of the boot. These areas help provide some additional traction when dribbling and controlling the ball. Due to their minimal nature, it’s difficult to notice much of a difference when playing. If nothing else, these textured areas help improve the aesthetic and overall design of the boot.

The lockdown on the Future Z 1.3 is as snappy and responsive as you need it to be. The uniform one-piece upper helps give the boots a secure feel while playing. FG/AG Stud Pattern

Keeping in step with their other models, Puma has implemented an FG/AG sole plate on the Future Z 1.3. This hybrid stud pattern is meant to be used on either firm ground (FG) or artificial grass (AG) surfaces.

This sole plate is lightweight and has an aggressive feel, making it great for getting traction on harder surfaces. To make the studs more suitable for use on artificial grass, Puma have rounded the studs on the sole plate. This makes the boots easier to twist freely on AG surfaces. Although the conical design of the studs makes them acceptable for playing on AG fields, the length of the studs make them much more suitable for natural FG surfaces.

Lacing System

For the first time, Puma is advertising that their boots can be worn with or without laces. It may be appealing to try to wear the Future Z 1.3s without laces, as they already have a great sock-like sensation. However, the laces provide a crucial component of the lockdown through the mid-foot. Without wearing laces, the Future Z 1.3s feel a bit less secure. For that reason, I would not classify these boots as truly laceless.
